Retail sales in the US increased 0.7% mom in November 2024, following an upwardly revised 0.5% rise in October and above forecasts of 0.5%. The data continued to point to a robust consumer spending during the holiday shopping season. Biggest increases were recorded for sales at motor vehicles and part dealers (2.6%) and nonstore retailers (1.8%). Increases were also seen for sporting goods, hobby, musical instrument, & book stores (0.9%); building material & garden equipment supplies dealers (0.4%); furniture (0.3%); electronics and appliances (0.3%); and gasoline stations (0.1%). In contrast, sales were flat at health and personal care stores and declined at miscellaneous store retailers (-3.5%); food services and drinking places (-0.4%); food and beverages stores (-0.2%); clothing (-0.2%); and general merchandise stores (-0.1%). Meanwhile, sales excluding food services, auto dealers, building materials stores and gasoline stations, which are used to calculate GDP, increased 0.4%.
