The reading showed business activity in the New York state edged only slightly lower, with new orders falling modestly (-7.9 vs -0.6) while shipments held steady (0.3 vs 3.9). Also, delivery times continued to shorten (-3.2 vs -9.2), and inventories moved lower for a second consecutive month (-10.6 vs -6.1). Meanwhile, labor market conditions remained weak, with a small decline in employment (-6.7 vs -7.9) and a sharp drop in hours worked (-17.8 vs -0.1). On the price front, input prices increased at a slightly slower pace (23.4 vs 26.5) while selling price increases remained steady and small (8.5 vs 6.1). Finally, firms were fairly optimistic that conditions would improve in the months ahead (22.9 vs 25.8).
