The US economy added 12K jobs in October 2024, well below a downwardly revised 223K in September and forecasts of 113K. It is the lowest job growth since December 2020 when 243K jobs were lost, due to the impact of strikes at Boeing. It is also likely that employment in some industries was affected by the hurricanes, but the BLS could not quantify the net effect. October reading is also much lower than the average monthly gain of 194K over the prior 12 months. Employment continued to trend up in health care (52K) and government (40K). In contrast, temporary help services lost 49K jobs and employment in manufacturing declined by 46K, reflecting a fall of 44K in transportation equipment manufacturing that was largely due to the Boeing strike. Employment showed little or no change in wholesale and retail trade; transportation; financial activities; leisure and hospitality. Meanwhile, revisions to employment for August and September showed 112K fewer jobs than previously reported.
