The US economy added 256K jobs in December 2024, the most in nine months, following a downwardly revised 212K in November, and once again beating market forecasts of 160K. Figures for October were also adjusted, resulting in a combined downward revision of 8K for October and November. In December, employment trended up in health care (46K), government (33K), and social assistance (23K). Also, retail trade added 43K jobs, following a 29K job loss in November, mostly due to clothing, clothing accessories, shoe, and jewelry retailers (23K); general merchandise retailers (13K); and health and personal care retailers (7K). Meanwhile, employment declined by 13K in manufacturing. Considering full 2024, payroll employment rose by 2.2 million in 2024, an average monthly gain of 186K, below 3.0 million in 2023 which represents an average monthly gain of 251K. However, the figures continue to signal a strong and stable labor market.
