Mortgage applications in the US sank by 10.8% from the previous week on the period ending on November 1st, the sixth consecutive decline in mortgage demand to mark a 35% plunge in the volume of mortgage applications during October. The aggressive decline since the start of the month was in line with the 67bps surge in benchmark interest rates in the period, as a series of strong economic data and the possibility of a Trump presidency drove markets to expect a less-dovish Federal Reserve next year and lifted yields for long-dated Treasury yields. Applications for a loan to refinance a mortgage, which are sensitive to short-term changes in interest rates, sank by 18.5%. In the meantime, applications for a mortgage to purchase a new home fell by 5%.
