The number of individuals filing for unemployment benefits in the US fell by 6,000 from the previous week to 213,000 on the period ending November 16th, the least since April, and well below market expectations of an increase to 220,000. The results extended the view that the US labor market remains at historically strong levels despite the aggressive tightening cycle by the Federal Reserve in the last quarters, adding leeway for the central bank to slow the pace of monetary loosening should inflation remain stubbornly high. The four-week moving average, which reduces week-to-week volatility, fell by 3,750 to 217,750. In turn, the non-seasonally adjusted claim count fell by 17,75o to 213,035, with sharp declines in California (-4,657) and Georgia (-2,154). On the other hand, outstanding claims rose to 1,908,000 in the prior week, the most in three years.
