Initial jobless claims in the United States fell by 2,000 to 220,000 on the first week of March, the lowest in three weeks, and below market expectations that it would rise to 225,000 to remain at historically low levels at the turn of the month. Similarly, recurring claims fell by 27,000 to 1,870,000 on the last week of February, well below expectations that it would reach the 1,9000,000 threshold. The result continued to show that the US continues to host a relatively tight labor market despite the prolonged tightening cycle. In the meantime, unemployment claims filed under programs for Federal government employees, which have been under close scrutiny due to firings by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), rose by fell by 54 to 1,580, but remained well above historical averages.
