Construction spending in the United States decreased by 0.2% month-over-month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $2,122 billion in January 2025, after a 0.5% increase in December and compared with market estimates of a flat reading. Private spending went down by 0.2% in the period, with the residential segment falling by 0.4%, driven by new multifamily projects (-0.7%). The non-residential segment showed no growth. Meanwhile, public spending increased by 0.1%, primarily due to higher spending on highway and street (0.6%), transportation (0.6%), sewage and waste disposal (0.4%). On the other hand, spending on residential public construction fell 1.1%.
