Building permits in the United States rose by 4.6% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.470 million in August 2024, revised down from a preliminary estimate of 1.475 million. Approvals of units in buildings with five units or more advanced by 8.2% to a rate of 503 thousand and single-family authorizations went up by 2.8% to 967 thousand. Across different US regions, there were increases in permits in the Northeast (2.8% to 145 thousand), the Midwest (12% to 206 thousand), and the South (5.4% to 815 thousand), while decreases were reported in the West (-1.3% to 304 thousand).
