The British economy expanded 0.9% year-on-year in Q2 2024, the biggest annual growth rate since Q3 2022, compared to 0.3% in Q1 and matching market forecasts, preliminary estimates showed. The services sector increased 1.3% (vs 0.4% in Q1) but production declined 0.6%, reversing from a 0.3% rise in Q1, mostly due to manufacturing (-0.5% vs 1.7%). Also, construction lost 1%, extending a 0.4% drop in Q1. On the expenditure side, gross fixed capital formation (2.8% vs 1.8%) expanded faster and household (1.6% vs 2.6%) and government (5.6% vs 7%) spending were also higher while exports continued to decline (-1.1% vs -2.2%) and imports rebounded (3.1% vs -5.1%). Compared to the previous quarter, the economy expanded 0.6%, after a 0.7% rise in Q1 and matching expectations.
