The unemployment rate in Thailand increased to 1.01% in Q1 of 2024 from 0.81% in the previous quarter, which was the lowest since Q4 of 2015. It marked the highest levels since Q2 of 2023 amid a contraction in agricultural sectors. The state planning agency said that employment edged down 0.1% from a year earlier in Q1, after a 1.7% gain in Q4 of 2023, due to lower farm jobs. Agricultural employment fell by more than 5.7% in Q1 during the off-season, while non-farm jobs grew 2.2%, boosted by tourism, with jobs in the hotel and restaurant sectors rising by 10.6%. Thailand recorded more than 9.3 million foreign tourist arrivals in Q1. Thailand's economy expanded by 1.5% yoy in Q1 of 2024, easing from a 1.7% growth in Q4 of 2024, with agricultural sectors shrinking faster (-3.5% vs -0.6% in Q4).
