Mauritius’s trade deficit widened to MUR 22.3 billion in December 2024, up from MUR 16.5 billion in the same month of the previous year. This was the largest monthly trade shortfall since December 2012, as imports climbed by 19.8% year-on-year to MUR 31.1 billion, primarily driven by higher purchases of crude materials, inedible, except fuels (+72.8%) and mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials (+51.8%). Meanwhile, exports dropped by 6.6% to MUR 8.8 billion, weighed down by lower shipments of machinery and transport equipment (-55.6%) and other commodities & transactions (-59.7%).
