Italy's trade surplus widened to EUR 5.98 billion in December 2024 from EUR 5.333 billion in the corresponding month of the previous year, surpassing market expectations of EUR 4.35 billion. Exports grew by 2.9% year-on-year to EUR 49.334 billion, mainly driven by stronger sales for pharmaceutical, chemical-medicinal and botanical articles (+35.5%), computers, electronic and optical equipment (+18.2%), and food products, beverages and tobacco (+10.0%). Among trading partners, the largest contributors to the growth were Spain (+15.1%), ASEAN countries (+32.2%), the UK (+14.0%), the Netherlands (+15.0%), and Belgium (+10.6%). Meanwhile, imports rose by 1.7% to EUR 43.353 billion, as purchases increased from non-EU countries (+7.7%). However, arrivals from the EU dropped (-2.4%). In 2024, the country posted a trade surplus of EUR 54.923 billion.
