The annual inflation rate in Fiji climbed sharply to 4.0% in January 2025 from 1.3% in December, marking the highest reading since last September. Food prices rose the most in five months (9.3% vs 1.4% in December) amid upward price pressures from other components including alcoholic beverages and tobacco (7.1% vs 9.2%), household equipment & routine maintenance (0.1% vs 0.3%), restaurants and hotels (1.6% vs 4.8%), education (0.4% vs 0.4%), and miscellaneous goods and services (1.1% vs 2.3%). Additionally, the cost of recreation and culture was flat after falling by 0.9% in December. Meanwhile, transport prices fell the least in four months (-3.5% vs -5.2%) and housing cost dropped at a slower rate (-1.0% vs -1.8%). Meanwhile, clothing & footwear prices continued to drop (-0.4% vs 0.3%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose by 2.0% in January, rebounding sharply from the prior 0.1% fall and indicating the fastest pace since February 2021.
