Australia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate edged higher to 4.1% in January 2025, up from December’s 4.0%, matching market estimates. It marked the highest jobless rate since last October, as the number of unemployed people increased by 23.4 thousand to 627,500, with those seeking full-time jobs rising 11 thousand to 424.7 thousand while those looking for part-time jobs advanced by 12.4 thousand to 202.8 thousand. Meanwhile, employment climbed by 44 thousand to a fresh high of 14.63 million, easily beating forecasts of a 20 thousand gain but declining from December's 60 thousand rise. Full-time employment increased by 54.1 thousand to 10.09 million, but part-time employment declined by 10.1 thousand to 4.54 million. The participation rate rose to a record peak of 67.3%, surpassing forecasts of 67.1%. The underemployment rate remained at 6.0%. Monthly hours worked in all jobs dropped by 7 million to 1,971 million.
