The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) maintained its cash rate at 4.1% during its April meeting, retaining borrowing costs unchanged after a 25-basis point cut in the February meeting, in line with market expectations. The Board noted that monetary policy is well placed to respond to international developments if they were to have material implications for Australian activity and inflation. The central bank expressed growing confidence that inflation is moving sustainably toward the midpoint of its 2–3% target range, as higher interest rates have helped bring aggregate demand and supply closer to balance. However, the RBA also highlighted an uncertain economic outlook for both domestic activity and inflation. Globally, risks remain significant, driven by geopolitical and policy uncertainties, such as the US tariffs. The committee also kept the interest rate on Exchange Settlement balances at 4.0%.
